As part of the Bristol Festival of Photography, the Cube Cinema will be screening Richard Press’ acclaimed documentary ‘Bill Cunningham New York’. Released in the US in 2011, the documentary has finally made it to UK screens this spring and offers an insightful look at Cunninghams’ life and work.
One of the world’s most famous fashion photographers, Cunningham has been capturing street style for the New York Times for decades. Riding around town on his Schwinn bicycle, he photographs everyone from industry icons to downtown eccentrics, and accompanies his images with playfully eloquent texts. Humble and self-deprecating, Cunningham’s overwhelming love is style, and he has never sought recognition as a great photographer: ‘The problem is I’m not a good photographer. To be perfectly honest, I’m too shy. Not aggressive enough. Well, I’m not aggressive at all. I just loved to see wonderfully dressed women, and I still do. That’s all there is to it.’
‘Bill Cunningham New York’ is screening at the Cube Cinema on Tuesday 8th and Wednesday 9th May. For more information on the screening or the film visit www.cubecinema.com and www.billcunninghamnewyork.com .
